The Bear Wasn’t Just a Guide

Peter kept working, lifting each creature with steady hands, while Hana received them and arranged a soft space nearby. When the fifth one reached the surface, they laid it gently with the others. All five huddled close, eyes wide and slow to adjust. Hana and Peter locked eyes.

They could carry four between them, but one would be left behind. The answer came to her fast, clear as a memory. The bear had already carried one. It had known what to do before anyone else. Maybe it still did. That thought settled everything.
