The Knot Gave Way
The well was deeper than Hana expected, and Peter’s voice had grown faint. She could still hear him moving, just barely. Her grip stayed tight, but the rope grew damp in her sweating hands. Then, without warning, it yanked hard.
The rope slipped fast, burning across her palms. The knot hadn’t held. She reached out, trying to grab it, but it sped past. Acting on instinct, she stomped on the end with all her weight. For a second, she thought it had stopped. But that hope vanished. The rope went slack. Peter had fallen into the dark below.
