Unlike the rest of the world, Americans refer to football as soccer but did not even invent the word “soccer.” The Britons first used the term in the 1800s to differentiate the game from rugby football.
In the ’80s, Britain started to phase out the word “soccer,” previously referred to as “association football.” Why did they make this move? The term had become “too American” for them to use for their beloved medieval game. It is now the most popular sport in the world.
