The Montmartre Stairs, 1936
This fascinating work was created by the French artist Jules Halasz, also known as “Brassa,” who was born in Hungary. This picture was shot at the very top of the steps on the street named Rue Foyatier. This specific alley was inaugurated in 1897 and given its current name in honor of the well-known artist Denis Foyatier.
The affection that Brassa had for his home city of Paris informed his artistic sensibilities. He would go around the streets at night, shooting pictures of people going about their daily lives. His work in this location has gone on to become a well-known representation of the French capital.
