A Bridge Of Seats During The Great Paris Flood In 1910

In January 1910, after a disturbingly continuous rainfall, Paris experienced a flood of the Seine River into the city’s public streets. During this time, anxious Parisians had to abandon their houses since the water had already reached dangerous levels—about 26 feet higher than the surrounding sea level.

This photograph illustrates the extreme measures that individuals were forced to take to make their way through the crowded streets. They came up with a variety of ingenious methods to go about, such as the constructing of sidewalks made of wooden planks, using canoes, and in this photo, using seats as a bridge for the people to walk over.
