It’s hard to imagine now, but in 1591, a woman was burned at the stake for taking a pain reliever during childbirth. Using anesthesia during labor was a relatively new practice, and some people believed that the pain of childbirth was a necessary part of God’s punishment for Eve’s original sin.

As a result, women who sought relief from labor pain were often accused of trying to “cheat” God and were punished accordingly. Thankfully, attitudes toward pain relief during childbirth have changed significantly since then.
