Former President Abraham Lincoln’s 19th Century Home Becomes Historic Museum Today

A modest home for a great president! Nestled in Springfield, Illinois, former president Abraham Lincoln’s 19th-century residence may look less for one of America’s most revered leaders. However, Abraham purchased the two-story house in 1844, 17 years before his presidential inauguration.

While the structure appears unchanged over the years, curators have painstakingly restored the house to its 1860s appearance. Today, known as the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Museum, it is a cherished landmark and pilgrimage site for history enthusiasts.
