San Francisco’s Lombard Street Wasn’t As Eye-Catching Back in 1922

This unorthodox road made it possible to traverse very steep land. During the early days of the construction of Lombard Street in San Francisco, California, the 590-foot-long road was far from the picturesque sight it is today.

Lombard Street’s design aimed to decrease the natural 27 percent grade by incorporating eight sharp turns for safer vehicle navigation. Designed by Carl Henry, a local property owner, Lombard Street in 1922 lacked the grandeur of the lush greenery adorning the street in the 2018 image.
